Meet Our Guest: Jessica Bent
Today we are thrilled to be with the one, the only, Jessica Bent. She’s a seasoned talent operations manager at Checkr, where she leads all recruiting operations with a focus on inclusive and efficient hiring processes. She has a robust background in recruiting and operations at companies like Figma, Crunchbase. She excels in developing data-driven strategies and innovative programs that enhance the candidate experience and empower hiring teams.
Getting A Fair Chance
Let’s set the stage by addressing something important to Checkr, fair chance hiring. Please define what that means to Checkr and why that’s an important message to remember throughout today’s conversation.
Fair chance hiring decisions is a cause that’s really important to us. It really started as a program that provides job training and formal learning programs to create career paths for those with an arrest or conviction history. It’s an apprenticeship that I’ve seen across the business in various ways that we provide to those people, and ultimately, it’s something that I am passionate about as an employee here at Checkr.
AI in the Hiring Process
What should we know about how AI is playing a role and also reshaping the entire process along the way?
From my experience as both a candidate and an ops manager, I really see AI as what I call a co-pilot in hiring. It’s there to really boost efficiency and free up hiring teams to focus on building those connections with candidates. I think AI should be the one to handle administrative tasks like writing job descriptions or taking interview notes and streamlining, like we talked about the hiring and background check process. Again, shout out to Checkr on that, but ultimately allowing those hiring teams to concentrate on what really matters which is building the relationships and making those informed hiring decisions.
The Candidate Experience
How are AI and automation improving the candidate experience?
AI can speed up interview scheduling, make that faster for candidates to get into the pipeline. Reduce wait times for candidates so they’re not just sitting around, hey, where’s that interview? What’s going on in my process? AI interviewing note-taking can help take notes for interviewers so they can really focus on the conversation with candidates.
A couple others that I love that I’m hearing more about are things like chatbots, which can provide instant responses to candidate inquiries that we’re not always online, and AI is there to help provide that support and guidance.
Last thing that I’m seeing a lot of too is just automated status updates to keep candidates informed, but also helping engage them throughout the hiring process. Keep them updated on what’s going on in their process. I really see AI enabling hiring teams to build better connections with candidates and leveraging it in that way.
