This speaks fathoms about the value they bring not only to our personal lives, but to our professional ones, as well.

Host Meghan M. Biro was joined by Kurgo CEO Gordie Spater to discuss why allowing pets in the workplace is a good policy to have.

Gordie discussed the many benefits from improved employee engagement and overall happiness to lowered employee turnover rates.

#WorkTrends Recap: The Candidate Experience

The employee engagement experience. The candidate experience. Both very valid and important topics to be considered in today’s business world. Gone are the days of companies ignoring their employer brand, reputation as an employer of choice and with that conducting interviews and onboarding new employees in a haphazard fashion.

With the jobs market leaning more towards the job seeker, now is the time for companies to invest in their reputation management and discover where additional attention is needed.

This week, Meghan M Biro was joined by her former co-host Kevin W. Grossman to discuss the importance of why all companies should conduct discoveries of how they are perceived by job seekers and candidates.

Here are a few key points Kevin shared:

  • When the candidate experience is great, candidates recruit on your behalf through referrals!
  • The companies that are taking a hard look at their candidate experiences are proactive and innovative
  • It’s important to survey all candidates, not just those that were hired when looking to improve the candidate experience

#WorkTrends Recap: Cyberslacking is a Workplace Epidemic

Improving employee productivity is a constant struggle. Social media and mobile devices have increased employee distractions and led to a new epidemic in the workplace.

Cyberslacking. This is not a word common to many people, but it’s a workplace condition that has become a problem of epidemic measures.

According to a Harris Poll for CareerBuilder, it was reported that twenty-four percent of workers admitted they spend at least an hour a day on personal email, texts, and personal calls. More than half of the employers surveyed said the biggest distraction at work comes from employees using their cell phones and 44 percent saying the same about the Internet. Whatever the gains from the application of new technology, cyberslacking is eroding American productivity from the inside out. It is being chewed up by the use and abuse of Internet access to social media and apps for non-work purposes.

This week host Meghan M. Biro was joined by best-selling author William Keiper to discuss how to combat this epidemic.

Here are a few key points that William shared:

  • The average smartphone user in the US is reaching for their phone 1500 times a week
  • The impact of cyberslacking is, just in the U.S, hundreds of billions of dollars in lost productivity
  • When people are hyperconnected they become disengaged

Have you noticed how popular video has become? It just keeps growing in popularity! Do you use video in your workplace? Well, if you want to know about video, this is the topic for you. Today, I hosted a special guest who knows a lot about the value that video brings to so many aspects of our business world.

On this week’s #WorkTrends show I was joined by guest Chris Savage, the CEO and co-founder of Wistia, a very popular video marketing and analytics platform.

Chris talked to us about how using video as a call-to-action via various forms of communications increases response rates and helps (in a huge way) to achieve recruiting, marketing, and sales goals. That’s pretty impressive, right?

Chris also shared some powerful tips with the TalentCulture community:

  • Video is an excellent tactic for explaining things. Be you and share what you know. It’s very effective and builds credibility to have experts on screen
  • Videos are the perfect vehicle for storytelling! Video works incredibly well to communicate complex messages
  • The Three“Must-Dos”of video are: Explain a solution linearly to automate, build a connection with the audience, and get on camera.

#WorkTrends Recap: “The 11 Laws of Likability”

Most of us want people to like us, especially in social settings, but sometimes the idea of going out there and schmoozing seems phony and feels like pretending. And who wants to feel like a phony? No one. Guess what? You don’t have to, according to today’s #Worktrends’ guest, Michelle Lederman.

Listen to the full #WorkTrends podcast on BlogTalk Radio now:  11 Laws of Likability.

Michelle is the author of the book, “The 11 Laws of Likability,” which talks about the value of connecting with others in meaningful and authentic ways. During our lively conversation today, we talked about relationship networking and what draws people to each other in a business capacity.

Michelle described the 11 laws she has identified as the most relevant and impactful aspects of building genuine relationships. As she stated,  it’s not about transactions, but more about connecting with people in a real and honest manner—that benefits everyone.

Michelle shared the following key points with the TalentCulture #WorkTrends community:

  • People are influenced by how they feel, more than what you say.
  • Energy is contagious! That’s The Law of Energy. Ask yourself, how does a candidate feel when interacting with people at your firm?
  • Understand The Law of Similarity. Find a personal connection or common work vision to align and from which to build a relationship.

Her book, “The 11 Laws of Likability” delves into the value of finding your authenticity and learning to build self-image, energy, curiosity, and listening skills to develop an effective, natural system for creating and maintaining relationships. We all learned a lot!

How to Convince Leaders to Invest in Company Culture

In addition to my leadership role at CultureIQ, I’m an adjunct professor teaching Entrepreneurship 2.0 at New York University Stern School of Business.  Believe me, starting a company is not easy, and there is a lot of material to cover in this class. Yet, every semester I dedicate an entire section to discussing company culture.

Why? Because I truly believe you cannot have a successful company without having a strong, positive company culture.

Thankfully, due to the shifting demographics of the workforce, company culture is getting more and more attention. In fact, according to Deloitte’s Global Human Capital Trends 2016 report, 82% of survey respondents believe that “culture is a potential competitive advantage.”

However, I still notice that culture is often dismissed as a “soft topic,” or people confuse it for the fun, nice-to-have perks in a company. If you’re reading this, you probably agree with me that culture deserves a seat at the strategy table, because it has real, tangible results.

The challenge, then, is closing the gap between what you know to be true and what happens in your organization.

I see three steps to this process:

  1. Define company culture in relatable terms
  2. Understand the potential ROI of company culture
  3. Build a unique case for investing in culture at YOUR company

Define culture in relatable terms

Company culture has a pretty simple definition: it is how things get done in an organization. What makes this topic hard to grasp is that it encompasses so much. Therefore, at CultureIQ, we have identified ten qualities common to high-performance cultures, and I’ve found that using this explanation makes the topic of culture more digestible to business leaders. The qualities are: agility, collaboration, communication, innovation, mission and value alignment, performance focus, responsibility, support, wellness, and work environment.

I have also found it helpful to link company culture to employee engagement. If culture is how things get done, employee engagement is how employees react to and feel about your culture. It is one outcome of having a high-performance company culture.

Understand the potential ROI of company culture

Luckily, there has been a lot of research in this area recently, so you have plenty of data points to choose from. I’ll share a few of my favorite examples, and I encourage you to compile a few stats that would resonate with your leaders.

  1. In a study of 100 organizations, Northwestern University researchers found that companies with satisfied employees also had a higher percentage of satisfied customers. These customers purchased the company’s products more frequently, maintained higher levels of loyalty, and reported greater satisfaction, which directly contributed to higher gross margins, higher repeat business, and reduced acquisition costs for each company. As someone who has always been passionate about customer service, this stood out to me.
  2. A meta-analysis by the UK’s National Institute of Healthcare Research found consistent links between employee engagement and individual performance, and engagement and discretionary effort. The more connected an employee feels to the organization’s culture, the more likely an employee will be to go above their job description and work harder, longer, or more creatively on a project.
  3. According to a recent study in the Journal of Organizational Behavior, a positive culture boosts performance, but strong performance alone isn’t enough to create a positive culture. This is another reason why it’s never too early to think about culture.

Build a unique case for YOUR company

Business executives tend to overestimate the state of engagement in their company, so one of the most effective things you can do is paint an accurate picture of your company’s culture.

To do this, collect systematic employee feedback and report on it in quantifiable terms as much as possible. It’s hard to argue with data. If possible, I encourage you to also dig into some of the other data you have at your disposal, such as retention statistics, performance metrics, or participation rates in trainings. Focus specifically on business metrics that your leaders care about, such as customer satisfaction ratings or operating costs.

As you work through the data, a few themes will start to stand out, and you’ll want to pursue those storylines. The result of these efforts will be two or three key cultural opportunities worthy of investment, and the data to back it.

Whether or not you follow these steps (or even need to), the secret to this process is translating company culture into a language any business executive can understand — data and metrics. This is how you’ll be able to align your company culture with your business strategy.

#WorkTrends Recap: Creating a Culture of Wellness

Health and wellness extends far beyond preventing the spread of germs in the office during cold and flu season. It is a combination of keeping your mind, body and mental wellbeing in good standing to reach a higher level of productivity. Companies should prioritize the general health and wellness of their employees because it can impact productivity and the bottom line.

Recent research indicates that the availability of a wellness program is a selling point when looking for a new job, but many indicate their workplace doesn’t offer one.

On this week’s #WorkTrends podcast and Twitter chat, Host Meghan M. Biro and our special guest Jenya Adler from Staples Business Advantage, discussed health and wellness in the office.

Here are a few key points Jenya shared:

  • A wellness program is more than just fitness plan. It takes into account the whole employee.
  • Break rooms are the heart of the office. Make them a place people want to gather.
  • Let your employees know it’s ok to work from home and recharge when they are sick.
