Exploring the Heart of Social Media Careers: #TChat Preview & Recap

There are thousands of them: Strategists, Specialists, Editors, Coordinators, Contributors, Community Managers. And that’s just in California. When you search for “social media jobs” on Indeed, for example, there are nearly 6,000 related jobs that come up. I have no idea what it would’ve been like just five years ago, but I’m sure it was only a fraction of that. All things social have permeated the enterprise, as well as small to mid-size business. Both B2C and B2B companies, non-profits and government agencies alike are creating social media careers. What’s really driving it all? Social recruiting and social marketing – sourcing applicants

Happy One Year Anniversary! #TChat Preview

Everyone loves a celebration, particularly me. So join us in celebrating the first anniversary of TalentCulture’s #TChat this Wednesday, November 16th at 7-8pm ET +. Yep, one year old this week. How can that be? When Kevin W.Grossman and I first started bouncing ideas back and fourth about #TChat, we had no idea of what to expect. I knew I wanted to tackle “The World of Work” and that it was not going to be an easy road to find an audience as we rotated our chat topics weekly. There are certainly other, more niche chats on Twitter where chatters know what to

The Why of Online Talent Communities: #TChat Preview

Community connected us around the writing. The writing and the peer reviews were important, yes; that’s why we were there, but the relationships that formed between myself and the other novice-to-published poetry, short story, novel and screenplay writers were what kept us coming back. The collaborative exercises, the chat rooms, the peer reviews and a myriad of other activities became the glue that bound us all together. For years after I still kept in touch with a handful of them. This was back in the early 2000’s, before the social networks of today like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Focus, Unthink (which I’m

Kids Today! On Generation Z: #TChat Preview

Originally posted on MonsterThinking.com One really can’t talk about the impact of future generations without sounding, well, a little bit like a curmudgeon.  So, in honor of his recent final broadcast, this week we’re channeling Andy Rooney as #TChat explores Generation Z and the impact of digital natives in the workplace. And now, a few minutes with Andy Rooney: Whatever happened to Generation Y?  Used to be a time when every employer out there couldn’t talk about anything else.  They were going to invade our workplaces with their newfangled tools and fancy technologies, and we were rolling out the red carpet, helicopter

Collaborative Community Results for NPR & HRevolution

“So, I really liked Kevin’s definition of talent communities from last week’s #TChat Radio Show. Kevin, why don’t you share that?” Stammer. Stutter. I have no idea. Here we were yesterday in our packed HRevolution session on building and maintaining talent communities, me in one of three groups we had broken up in to, and after all the research, writing and talking about it to date, I couldn’t define it on the spot if my life depended on it. Thankfully it didn’t, but still. My point being it continues to be a much larger multifaceted conversation with a moving-target definition depending

Get to Know the "Talent" in Talent Community: #TChat Recap

Two people meet on the street. “Hi, how are you today?” “I’m great thanks. And you?” “Great. Repeat this thousands of times per day as we move along our own separate ways, whether we’re really great or not, and what do we have? Lots of insincere transactions. And we live with them, although that doesn’t make for tight-knit community. It makes for a polite one, but not one that’s necessarily a collaborative or problem-solving one. Businesses today need collaborative, problem-solvers across all positions, from management to front-line. If you’re sourcing and recruiting them the old school way, via job boards and

Emergence of Talent Communities… Not Pools

Within HR and Recruiting, for example, a new technology is unfolding – one which will, in my opinion, change how individuals find work and how companies recruit. Talent Communities are here, driven by the powerful engines of social media, search, big data, ubiquitous computing and social communities.Talent communities are now replacing what many recruiters have traditionally called talent pools. Simply having a database of resumes to sort through to make a talent match has transformed into what we know as social recruiting.

Lou Imbriano "Turns Customers Into Fans" His New Book

Let’s be honest. Some leaders make a difference, and some leaders just take up space. Lou Imbriano is definitely one of the former. As we well know leaders comes in a variety of personality flavors. As CMO of the New England Patriots, and now as CEO of TrinityOne, Lou has brought career passion and flair to sports marketing in one of the biggest sports towns around right here in Beantown. As a valued friend of mine, Lou has brought richness and depth to what could have been just another business acquaintance. And I’m thrilled he’s asked me to read and comment on

Zero Unemployment: It's On Us: #TChat Recap

Maybe we would be better off putting economists and seasoned (small) business leaders in office. Because maybe then we’d create a better private sector environment that brings back a job growth heartbeat. I didn’t want to make this week’s recap political, but that’s difficult to do when all I hear is crazy extremism with little to no economic basis for growth, and certainly no viable plans. At all. Tonight is the President’s job speech, and the anticipation for more of nothing is palpable. And the Republican debate last night was just more of the same, meaning more of nothing. What ails

Leaders Dive Into The Workplace Cloud

I only sometimes talk about technology here. Yes, my inner nerd is still alive and well for those of you wondering what I’ve been up to lately. I’ve been hanging out in the clouds pondering this enormous topic. I assume, like 90% of us, it is there, meeting my needs, and don’t worry overmuch about marketing labels. Leaders have a way of offloading (ignoring?) many of the technical details as we hurry about our over-scheduled days. “The Cloud” is one of those technology marketing terms which represents a shift in the way technology is delivered; after all, you’d have to really

Facebook & the Strange Engagement Arrangement: #TChat Recap

Just because I like you, doesn’t mean we’re friends. At least on Facebook. I’m talking about the strange engagement arrangement between companies, associations, non-profits, clubs, professional groups, other groups, events — and their followers. Or, more appropriately, their fans who “like” them by clicking on a thumbs-up tab and then getting streams of information from those groups. Maybe even posting a comment or two at times on those group pages. It’s not really a town hall meeting, or an intimate community even, although there are sporadic bursts of interactivity, but Facebook is a universe unto itself — and the over 750

Change HR with Your Own "silly walk"

HR is such an open, unique field that finds itself bound by the past. Organizations continue to churn and churn on HR programs and ideas that haven’t been current in years (or even decades). The difficulty facing folks is how to break away from the past. We tout “change management” as a profession, but change is tough. People aren’t as open or adept to change as people may profess. Also, HR has a reputation of telling others what to do and/or what policies to step in line with. Not too appealing, honestly. However, fear not! There is a great way to

Everybody's Story Matters: #TChat Recap

“Everybody’s story matters.” That sentiment is from an amazing interactive storybook we’ve been watching with my older daughter on the iPad. It’s called The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore and it’s all about the importance and power of reading books and stories. Everybody’s story, including yours and yours and yours. As I wrote Monday, when TalentCulture founder Meghan M. Biro and I launched #TChat last November, we had no idea it would take off like it did. It’s been an amazing journey and we are more inspired more than ever to keep the conversation moving forward. To now keep

Are Dream Jobs A Reality? #TChat Preview

Originally posted by Charles Purdy, one of #TChat’s moderators, on MonsterThinking Blog The term “dream job” means different things to each of us — and for many job seekers right now, a dream job would be any job. But when most people talk about their dream job, they’re talking about the elusive position that engages their passions and interests, is well suited to their skills, challenges their intellect (but isn’t too challenging), and integrates well into their life. In our dream jobs, our bosses are wise mentors who recognize our unique brilliance. Our coworkers are competent and witty. And our paychecks

What Your Workers Really Think About HR: #TChat Preview

Originally posted by Charles Purdy on MonsterThinking Blog If you’re in an HR or recruiting position, you likely interact with a lot of job seekers and employees, and  you may believe that you already know everything you need to know about their mindsets and attitudes.  After all, you’re in the people business. Plus, you’re busy! You’ve got an inbox full of resumes and a calendar full of meetings and interviews, and you think you’re making things easier by applying an unchanging checklist to the job seekers you have to sort through. It’s time to think again. Preconceived notions can hurt you

Diversity Still Matters in Today’s Workplace? #TChat Preview

Originally posted by Joe Gerstandt on MonsterThinking Blog Intersections baby, its all about the intersections… The majority of the work that we do around diversity and inclusion as HR professionals is focused on identity diversity, which is differences in our social identities…things like age, gender, race, ethnicity, orientation, physical ability, etc. I think that there are probably some interesting discussions to be had  about how effective this work has been and currently is, but I think we can at least agree that there is a lot of work still to be done. I would suggest that, not only do we need

Magnetic Leadership Attracts Top Talent: #TChat Preview

Originally posted by Matt Charney, one of #TChat’s moderators, on MonsterThinking Blog The CEO of today looks a lot different than  the company man of previous generations, increasingly likely to have traded  in the gray wool suit for shorts and flip-flops, their secretaries for smart phones, and corporate branding with personal branding. One only has to look as far as Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck, or Bill Gate’s bifocals, or even Undercover Boss to see the impact that leaders have on the way clients, and candidates, perceive and interact with an organization.  Tony Hsieh has made Zappos as recognizable for its corporate culture as

The World of Work for New Grads: #TChat Preview

Originally posted by Charles Purdy, one of #TChat’s moderators, on Monster Thinking Blog It’s not just that many recent grads are new to the world of work — it’s also that the world of work has changed quite a lot in recent years. Of course, many of the questions new grads face — such as “Should I follow my passions or work on finding a stable career?” “What mistakes should I

HRO: Engagement Perception and Social Recruiting Technology

I spent most of this past week at the HRO Today conference in Las Vegas as a member of the blog squad, and what do I have to show for it? A new appreciation for HR and Recruiting technology innovation – that’s what. On the personal side, new friendships were made and old bonds renewed. In short, a very good conference. I even had an opportunity to sing along with dueling pianos  – talk about a Talent Show. Right up my alley. We had many laughs. What happens in Vegas is not always meant to stay in Vegas after all. This week’s

Innovation Gap Realities Workforce Technology: #TChat Preview

We’ve talked before about how hot the theme of ‘innovation’ is. In the technology world, much of what’s filed under ‘innovation’ is related to cloud technology, or mobile, or ‘apps’. What isn’t so hot, in my observation, is technology that links innovations to people. And so it is here at the HRToday conference in shiny Las Vegas, where technology is everywhere, but the links to employees and workforces are not so clear. I’m looking forward to visiting the technology demos, and especially speaking with today’s analyst panel, which is bringing a group together to discuss the ‘innovation gap’ in HR technology.

Small Business the Bigger Picture: #TChat Preview

Originally posted by Matt Charney, one of #TChat’s moderators, on MonsterThinking Blog It’s hard to overstate the impact of small business, even by presidential proclamation, as Barack Obama kicked off National Small Business Week, declaring: “From the family businesses that anchor Main Street to the high-tech startups that keep America on the cutting edge, small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the cornerstones of America’s promise.” As Obama (or proxy) observed, it turns out Mom & Pop and VC babies share more in common than size; they share spirit, “the idea that if you have a good idea and are willing
